Life Drawing Progression

This was one of the earliest drawings I did during life drawing. in this we were looking at shadows and drawing objects such as the coffee cup and the chair.

This one is hard to see but what we were doing during this one is we were trying to use different drawing materials such as chalk to draw outlines of a person.

once again quite hard to draw due to not being able to get hold of a large enough scanner and there were a lot of creases in the paper. However what this one was showing was using lots of different colours to try and draw an image.

This one is drawings of Gordon wearing a horse mask. Same principle of trying to draw using different colours however it also gave us a change to practice drawing different shapes of a head.

This was a full standing up drawing of Gordon that we had to attempt to draw using a single colour of chalk.

Now on this work we had to not only use a different material but also try and use different colour paper. I felt the different coloured paper help the chalk stand out a lot more and it was much easier to try and make an image using the chalk on this paper. Also during these sessions were had to attempt to draw different materials and different items. As you can see during this picture Gordon was wearing a robe. I don't know if i drew it correctly but it helped to work with creases in the robe.

once again different coloured paper and using a different material to draw with. we also were attempting to draw different items and materials. Such as the plant on the left, the item on the right and also the leather beanie bag that Gordon is sitting on. This brought a new challenge to life drawing.

This is nearly the same scene as previously except I used blue chalk instead of green to see what the image would look like and Gordon also changed his pose. I believe also on the beanie bag was some sort of fabric.

Similar to the image done a few drawings back this is Gordon again in a robe and also holding a staff. However from the photo I took you cannot exactly see the staff. Now i believe that this is extremely helpful not only because my character is wearing a cloak/robe but also because there will be a lot of creases in it which I will need in my character to make it look better.

Now in this scene I was using coloured paper and white chalk again. I started to get familiar with the white chalk and started to enjoy using it. This was all part of the same day were we where attempting to draw different items and materials in our scenes.

This scene is a little hard to see but its Gordon other the beanie bag with his hands on his head. This scene was great because it was more pushed together where everything was included.

 Now this was the next week and we had no person to draw. So instead we got given a presentation on the wall that had a bunch of different shaped people on it. This really helped if our character was not a normal human shape. I found this extremely helpful to come up with ideas for my character and if I wanted him shaped differently.

 Now this week we were told to work more on frame and structure of the person instead of just drawing the person and shading it. I was introduced to this style of drawing the skeleton. Now i was specificity told to do this but I was told to just get the structure of Gordon. So this is how i drew it, and this really helped me to getting the proportions of drawing a character.

Now in these two images we were told again to get the proportions of the person first. However then was asked to now draw over the top of our structure with what Gordon actually looks like. This really helped me out and I was able to get I believe I quite well proportioned drawing of Gordon. We were told to keep the lines in from the structure to show that we used one in the first place.

 Now this week we got a new model come in for us to draw and it was a female model. This allowed us to get a new perspective on the difference between a male and female shape. This would have been really helpful if my character was female but overall it did help with my drawing skills. We were told to draw the outline of the person and the structure as-well.

This is my last "life drawing" drawing. This was a image I drew using different materials which I think were chalk and charcoal. Using the skills I had learned previously I drew this image. I done the original structure drawing first but I did it lightly so I could be easily rubbed out when I wanted to draw over it. Overall I think I gained some skill from live drawing and it also helped me to explore different drawing materials and techniques to help me drawing.

Skeleton Beauty Pose

This drawing is the beauty pose of my character. I also added rips too the clothing and I wanted to add some sort of power to the character and I chose to do fire as you can see from the image. I also chose to use the anger expression of the skull because I felt it was more necessary for the scene.

Character Progress

This is my character model sheet. I chose to do a T pose to help see the whole character. I put some detail into the drawing to show things like how his cloak will be creased and that you will be able to see the left foot under the robe.

Skull Emotions

Now here is my attempt to try and get emotions out of skull. What I did to try and do this was I got the original face and I distorted it in such a way that the skulls look as if they are expressing an emotion.

Here I drew the skull that I wanted to use for my character model. I wanted the skull to be kind of old and dirty so I made it slightly grey and a tint of yellow.

Environment Process

First I started with the outline of me scene. Now the pillars go on forever, however because of the lighting i want to use these are really the only pillars you will possibly see.

First I started with the Floor because it will be a good base to go off, and it will also help me estimate what the lighting will look like on the pillars and how much light will actually hit them.

Now this part jumps a little in front. However by here I had 3 Pillars done and I also drew the floor differently because it suited the art style i was drawing the pillars. Now I didn't actually save it but the way the pillars looked originally was quite cartoon styled with a shade to them. However I decided to change this after drawing the 3rd pillar in a more painted kind of style.

Now all I started to do here was start adding more pillars and make the lighting look better.

Now I added a background and some other pillars further in the background. The background helps the scene look darker and also because the pillars were slightly transparent from the pen pressure they appear darker now.

In this one I wanted to show the outline I have been using the draw the pillars in the scene. Also there is a few added pillars.

This last one I added some skulls to help with the feeling of the place and I also wanted it to show the size of a person compared to the scene.

Prop Model Sheet

Now this should have been uploaded before i uploaded my prop process for beauty shot. However This is my model sheet for my prop.

Now I chose to have the teddy bear standing up so that it was easier to see all the detail that the prop has. This is not exactly detailed and does not show the texture that will be used on it for later. I also was not sure if i should put lighting in because it makes the back quite dark. Although the back doesn't really have that much detail on it so it is not too bad.

Character Emotions

now my character is a skeleton so emotions for a skeleton would technically not exist because your facial expressions is nearly completely done up of your face muscles. However I thought I could still alter the skeleton in such a way it would appear it has emotions.

By simply changing the shape of the eye sockets and moving the jaw around i was able to pull off some emotions. However after a while of trying and failing i was not able to really do any more expressions that didn't really look the same as the 5 I got here.

Eye Drawing

To get myself into drawing my character I draw an eye to help me practice drawing on Photoshop. My character is a skeleton so he doesn't actually have an eye but this helped me practice how to do shading, lighting and colouring.

I added some more shading to practice and also added some faint lighter areas.

Then I also wanted to test how easy changing certain colours were such as his iris because I done everything in separate layers.

Now for this part I basically made a spotted brush and then I basically just spotted around the skin. I also got another brush that was lines and plotted that around the skin as well.

Lastly I put eye lashes on the eye. Now the eye lashes do not exactly look well done but this was just a draft drawing I wanted to do before starting my character drawing. I also attempted to add some sort of reflection in the eye showing the eye lashes reflecting.
